From the Ragtime Calendar

The Eau Claire Ragtime Festival starts tomorrow, January 8, and goes through Sunday, January 10. Here's the info from the Ragtime Calendar on Page 8 of the December/January American Rag:

Eau Claire Ragtime Festival, Eau Claire, WI. Carl Sonny Leyland, Ivory and Gold. Four concerts, sing-a-longs, food and root beer floats, Saturday symposia and silent films, 1907 timeline and vintage dress display, twin piano lounge, Friday dinner, Saturday dinner, Sunday buffet and Frigid Frolics farewell bash. (Info: 715-834-2668; e-mail .info@ecragtime.org).

I suspect the list of artists is quite a bit longer than this, but we have a difficult time getting information from the Ragtime groups, so this was taken a month or two ago from the Eau Claire web site. Click on their link or give them a call to see if there have been any additions since then.

On The Home Front

There isn't much to report on the home front today. Don picked up his new glasses and is back to work. I'm going carpet shopping with Mom this afternoon. The dogs and birds are napping -- their favorite pasttime, other than barking. Yes, Elmo barks, too.

I have time to get in a couple of hours of transcription practice, if I get to it soon. And later there will be time to knit. Have a great day!

On The Home Front

Today is lesson day at Cozy Quilt'n. I'll be working on the commission quilt that's almost finished. Hopefully, I can at least start the borders today, and finish the piecing next week. Here's a peek at the photo that's in the magazine the pattern is in:

I think this is the only other current project that hasn't been posted yet. It's a dark blue sock (darker than the photo) with a diamond pattern for Don. Sometimes diamonds are a man's best friend!

Last but not least, Elmo is finally getting the hang of sitting on the wider door of her new cage, but isn't too sure of what that camera-thing is in her face!

SacJazz Traditional Jazz Youth Band Festival

The Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society and Sacramento State University are holding their 5th annual SacJazz Traditional Jazz Youth Band Festival on Saturday, February 13, 2010. If you're going to be in the Sacramento area, I can promise you that there will be good music at the TJYBF! Some of these kids are already playing professionally.

In their words:
"The Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival is an all-day festival dedicated to the performance and teaching of traditional jazz, with combo bands performing non-competitively.

Every combo receives feedback and lead-sheet clinics following its performance.

Also included: an optional Friday evening (pre-festival) hosted jam session, master classes, noon concert, Evening Showcase concert, and admission to the STJS 'Jazz Sunday.'

TJYBF is believed to be the only scholastic festival for Dixieland or traditional jazz, and is open to school bands, jazz club-sponsored bands, and independent youth bands.

Anyone may purchase a festival pass to attend performances. For 2010, we welcome Jason Wanner (piano) as our guest artist/clinician."

On The Home Front

It's been a busy day! I had forgotten that I had a quilt to do for a new customer. It's now quilted and ready to return to her, but it took most of the day. Here's a little piece of it while it was on the quilting machine. Each block is an apple, with 'peels,' stems, and leaves appliqued, and I just happened to have a quilting design that matched!

Our landscaper showed up today with some trees that we had asked him to get for us. He replaced a palm that had died by the koi pond, planted our live Christmas tree in the front yard, a Purple Robe Locust tree also in the front, and a Crepe Myrtle in the back. We're looking for some beautiful purple blooms this spring. Here's the new Crepe Myrtle backed by the sunset.

Jazz~N~Aweigh to Florida and Beyond

Readers of The American Rag know that Jazz~N~Aweigh is a terrific cruise/tour agency headed by Diane Cottingham. This month Diane has scheduled a 3-day pre-cruise tour of Ft. Lauderdale and Miami that leads into a 10-day JazzSea Caribbean cruise. On board the Celebrity Cruises ship Equinox there will be 6 bands, including the JazzSea Jammers.

Diane's tour includes 3 nights in Hollywood, FL with breakfast each morning, a welcome dinner party, a day tour of Miami that includes South Beach, the Art Deco District, Coral Gables, and Little Havana. There will be a visit to an Alligator Farm, an Airboat ride, and a casino stop. Contact Diane at 206-542-9332, 800-348-5800, or http://www.jazz-n-aweighnews.com/ to get the full scoop on the tour and cruise. We have travelled with Jazz~N~Aweigh and with JazzSea, and can vouch for a wonderful time with both of them!

On The Home Front

Ishbel is finished! According to the directions, it should be 48.5" across the top. Did I do a swatch first? Nooooo. Per the instructions, I purchased 4 ply fingering weight yarn (Malabrigo) and the correct needles, and happily started knitting. The result? It measures 36" across the top. The good news is that I intended it to be used as a scarf, and it will be large enough for that. Here it is, blocking on the floor.

Now, back to the socks, and then possibly another Ishbel, or maybe a WendyKnits pattern, this time for me!

Tomorrow it's back to the books . . . actually, the sound files. Transcription study starts again after too much time off; first to recover from shingles, then the holidays and some marathon knitting. Toto's just happy soaking up the afternoon sun.

Happy New Year

"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called 'Opportunity' and its first chapter is New Year's Day." Edith Lovejoy Pierce
